"I can't wait for everyone to hear these songs," shares Camp about the new album. "After all these years, it's amazing how the well to draw from never runs dry, when we rely on Him. The Lord continues to give deeper and deeper songs that speak to different seasons of life. With this new album, we're doing some things we've never done before. I'm releasing five songs with five different music videos for each song, before the album even comes out. And I'm definitely ready to play these songs live. On 'The Answer Tour' we'll be playing new songs of course but also bringing back some very early ones. It's a very exciting season."
“I can’t wait for everyone to hear these songs,” Jeremy Camp said about his new album "The Answer." “After all these years, it’s amazing how the well to draw from never runs dry, when we rely on Him. The Lord continues to give deeper and deeper songs that speak to different seasons of life. With this new album, we’re doing some things we’ve never done before."
One of those things was the fact that he released five songs and accompanying music videos prior to the release of the album. But another thing that is new and featured here is a new sound.
I will be honest. I have not heard much of Jeremy Camp's music. I am familiar with his singles, namely "Overcome," "The Same Power," "I Am Not Ashamed" (which never made it onto an album), and "There Will Be A Day." We do own Jeremy Camp's album "Speaking Louder Than Before" (where "There Will Be A Day" claims a home), and I do remember the album, at least the first track, being kinda rocky.
Of course, the singles do show a softer side of Jeremy Camp, but I have always known him to be a rock worship artist. (Oh, I also have heard "Beautiful One," which was featured in the 2009 compilation "Raise Up The Crown.") So I was surprised, both pleasantly surprised and shocked, when "Word Of Life" started its spins on the radio, for it featured a full on electro-pop sound. But the "pleasantly surprised" part of my surprise dominated "shocked." One thing I have complained about electronic music are the vocals. Many people are starting to sound like Capital Kings, or at least someone who kinda sings the songs but not with power or feeling . . . like Jeremy Camp.
Going into the album, I was excited to hear deep, powerful vocals mixed with electronic beats. Let us dive into the album together!
The album starts off with lead single "Word Of Life," which features electronic beats we now have been used to in popular Christian music as of late. Inspired by John 6, the song celebrates the benefits of the Lord in that He gives life to the "weary heart" and leads us to His "open arms."
The next song, "My Defender," thanks the Lord that he lights our way when we walk down the paths of the "power of the unknown." But while the word "defender" can refer to physical protection, Jeremy Camp was thinking about how the spiritual defense the Lord gives. "I can see You when the night is closing in / And I will trust You when it seems that there's no hope." With electronic beats and a soft, but sweet-sounding guitar line, "My Defender" is a great encouragement to all believers.
"The Answer" is truly the heartbeat of this album. As this album declares the awesomeness of our God to both the believer and the unbeliever, this song sums it up by saying "I know the answer, to every question / The one solution, to every fear / I know my help and where it comes from / Jesus, He is the answer." A great reminder to us Christians and a great testimony to those who don't believe.
After hearing the previous three, you would expect "Storm," just by reading the title, to have some sort of heavy electronic sound to it, but it doesn't deliver. Instead, Jeremy Camp calls out for revival, like a storm, to "come like a crashing wave." This is a very passionate song for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and it didn't have to be musically heavy to portray that!
"My Father's Arms" shares and rejoices in the love the Father has for his children. "Here my fears are gone / Here I'm safe from harm / There is nowhere else that I would rather be." While the background does seem repetitive, this is a nice reminder of His comfort and love for us.
"Never Stopped Loving" has a similar message to the previous song, as this ballad is potentially written from the perspective of a prodigal. "When I had gone astray / How You would chase me / When I was so afraid / You would embrace me." Though this is a decent song, I prefer the impact the previous song had than this particular track.
The album starts to turn a corner in message from sharing with us "The Answer" of life to encouraging us to share the Good News with "Tell The Whole World," as Jeremy Camp sings "I'm living proof that there's a Savior." I love Jeremy Camp's passion pour out in his lyrics as he sings "I wanna see Your people set free / I wanna see the nations on their knees." This song take a more typical CCM pop sound, but not ultra-upbeat, but it is anthem-worthy!
Then Jeremy Camp starts to rejoice in thinking about the future hope he has in Christ when he reaches "Heaven's Shore." I love the simple love of the Lord he reflects in his songs, especially this song. The beautiful music adds to the emotion and the song makes me think about my future hope and the glory of the Lord.
"Carriers" is a prayer for the "Fire of Heaven / Fall down on us / To be carriers, carriers." This is another anthem-worthy song (with pop music getting as epic as it can) that we should remember to encourage us to share the Good News, but also to ask the Lord for his empowering Spirit to fall upon us.
The music is upbeat as Jeremy Camp sings "I cannot contain / I cannot contain / What a love so great / What a price you paid." Man, this song is so filled with joy and excitement to serve the Lord. "How can I keep / How can I hide / This fire inside" Jeremy Camp asks. This is definitely a highlight of the album, not just because of the fun beat, but his passionate and joyful lyrics.
The last track, "Awake O Sleeper," is a cover of The Brothers Bright. This cover does copy the original in its country-based sound, while incorporating some pop elements. I love the diversity this brings to the album. I was expecting a ballad to close out the album, but this really got me grooving and made for a perfect closer! "Do you hear the lion roar? / Wake, o, sleeper / Stand with me, we'll fight the war / Wake, o, sleeper." This stellar cover made me smile! I am sure that fans of Crowder would appreciate this track.
"Look at who Jesus is. Whatever situation you’re in, if you need comfort, or if you are going through grief, or need provision, strength or guidance, He is all those things. Look at what He’s done, look at the names of Jesus, look at His attributes, how He walked, again, He is all those things. That IS the answer. Literally, Jesus is the answer. To EVERYTHING."
Jeremy Camp is full of encouraging words throughout this album, reminding us of the love of the Lord and reminding us to share the good news. We all need to be reminded of His love, even some of us who have been walking on the path for a while.
The album didn't live up to the "Word Of Life" sound I thought that this album would follow along with. I was expecting a few more upbeat tunes, but the lyrics make up for that. But the album did sound a little plain and, with the wonderful and welcome exception of "Awake O Sleeper," could have used a little more variety.
One thing about this album that impressed me was the fact that Jeremy Camp co-wrote all the songs (with the exception of The Brothers Bright cover) and played guitar on more than half of the tracks. Not that you're a horrible artist if you don't play instruments on your album (but you are a horrible artist if you don't write any of your songs), but it is appreciated and reflects more of his vision in the music (even if the guitars are kinda atmospheric).
"The Answer" is full of encouraging tunes for the believers and songs of testimony for those who do not believe. Please pray that the lost will hear about the love of the Lord and want to run into the Father's arms.
